February 28th, 2016

The boys and I are having so much fun this morning, but it's hard for anyone to get a word in. So there's a lot of interrupting going on. I finally told Kellan he really has to pay attention when someone else is talking and not interrupt. I knew he wasn't paying attention to me as I tried to teach him this lesson. I finally looked him in his blue eyes and said "Kellan! Do you understand?!". He saluted me and said "understand!". Maybe he was paying attention but - oh he just interrupted my typing...

We were trying to figure out how to set up the volcano Santa brought the boys for Christmas. Kellan kept begging Grammy to read the instructions. Grammy was. But Kellan kept asking and asking her to read the instructions. Finally Grammy put the instructions down, grabbed Kellan's rubber cheeks, laughed and said, "I am reading the instructions, Kellan!" Kellan looked puzzled and asked "then why aren't your lips moving?" We all laughed. We didn't realize Kellan doesn't know you can read things to yourself...

Camden is such a great reader. Speaking of said volcano kit, he sounded out every word of "Make this Volcano erupt". I just had to help him with the word 'erupt'. Kellan proudly grabbed the box and 'read' "Make this Volcano interrupt!". I'm starting to see a pattern here on the interruption front. See first paragraph of today's blog...

I have mentioned previously that Camden is really good at anything he tries, just not the best at carrying a tune. So when he announced from the back seat of the car that he's a really good 'lip sync-er', I couldn't help but giggle.

Granfy came home with a pizza and Kellan threw a huge fit. We were all stunned by this sudden outburst. So Kellan thoroughly explained to us that he only likes pizza on Mondays. Alrighty then...

We were in the McDonald's drive thru, and Kellan was so excited. He wasn't getting food, but he wanted his window rolled down so he could show the lady he was drinking orange juice. As we waited, Kellan kept practicing how he was going to tell the lady he had orange juice. I don't know why this was so important to him, but hey, I'll support my boys any way I can. This was what I heard from the backseat - "I'm drinking orange juice, wait, I'll say it like this. I'm drinking orange juice. Yeah that's better"...

Camden's learning a lot about Lent at school. He wrote down that he would give up the iPad on Saturdays for Lent. We all looked at Kellan and asked him if he would like to give up the iPad on Saturdays for Lent. He looked up (from the iPad), smiled, said "Nope!" cheerfully and went right back to watching Monster Trucks on the iPad...

While the boys keep proposing we play the quiet game in the car, it's not as dreamy as it may sound. Camden's rules are that he can talk during the quiet game if he happens to think of something he wants to say...

After we left Buffalo Wild Wings I actually saw a light bulb pop up above Camden's head. He looked at me amazed and said, "Mom! The Buffalo Bills were named after Buffalo Wild Wings!" I said, "really?". He replied, still in amazement, "Yes! They both start with Buff!"...

Camden is really into football - YAY!- and Kellan is trying, bless his little heart. He matter of factly said when we were picking teams, "I'm not Seattle, I'm Seattle"...

Trying to quiz Kellan, I asked him how to spell Tilley. He launched into "Whole Mary, Hail of Grace"...

Kellan asked me if he could watch a movie because he was 'really stressed out'. Ah, the hectic life of an almost 5 year old...

Aunt Martha Ann, we're praying for you!

Camden is the sweetest most thoughtful boy - and that's not just because I'm biased. Mrs. Weckerly mentioned that the class had just used the last of the hand sanitizer. The next morning he shouted, "Mom! We need to stop at Walgreens and get hand sanitizer!". We were running right on time for school, and I know a 'quick' stop to Walgreens is not in the cards when I'm with a monkey and a cow. But, I thought Mrs. Weckerly had asked the kids to pick some up so we stopped. Turns out, Mrs. Weckerly never asked the kids to bring in hand sanitizer, Camden just knew the class was out and wanted to help out. He gets his kind heart from me... Hey! I heard that!

Kellan took his Kindergarten assessment last week. This could have so many more blog details, especially since Granfy took him to the test, but things went really well! In fact, Kellan did amazing and is definitely ready for Kindergarten in the Fall! He was on such a high all day. On the way home, he would yell out random letters, and if they happened to spell a word, he would look at me with a knowingly yet shocked expression that he could spell. He got a little too confident for his flood-y britches and said, "Mom! I bet I can spell traffic light!" As I braced myself for this one, he carefully spelled out H-O-P. I played this well, if I do say so myself and yelled, "Kellan! You just spelled hop! You are so smart!" Camden was just taking this all in. Luckily, he quietly took this all in...

So the boys have are always giving me a hard time about loving Hanson, but they honestly don't even know they're giving me a hard time. Every time we listen to a song, they have to ask if they're girls. I've explained a million times that they were younger when they recorded this incredible CD, so their voices sound higher. Anywhoo, we were ALL happily listening to MMMBop, when Kellan asks in his cloggy voice from the backseat, "Mom, do the girls in the band you like wear glasses?" I may have done an eye roll, but I was in the front seat and he couldn't see-so no harm no foul. I said, "no, they don't wear glasses". Kellan thought a minute and then said, "Oh! So they have eyes then". What?!

This morning, we were walking out the laundry room door, hands full, coats half on, phone in mouth because my hands weren't free and Kellan suddenly stopped and blocked the doorway. He got the look of someone on a game show that was about to have the prize he won revealed to him. I was so stunned by his actions I actually forgot about getting my 22 children out the door and to school on time. He looked at me excitedly with wide eyes and asked me what kind of car I have. Since we weren't exactly in the garage yet, he couldn't see the car, but I had made no mention of getting a new car. I opened the door and watched my blue eyed cow to see if he'd be disappointed by seeing the same old car. But nope, not this guy. He cheered and said, "Yay! The orange car!". This is the orange car I've had for about 85 years, but if he's happy, I'm happy...Even non exciting things are exciting in the Tilley household...

February 2nd, 2016

So, here's what happened today...

Grammy took the boys to WalMart while I was working late. I got a text from Grammy that read, "Kellan accidentally took something from WalMart" along with the saddest emoticon I have ever seen. I debated acknowledging this text, but something told me not blocking out these kinds of things is the motherly thing to do.

Turns out, Kellan had grabbed 'Flurp' one of his favorite novelty toys. (It makes a toot sound, so obviously my flesh and blood would be fascinated with a toy like that). Kellan honestly didn't realize this was in his hand and after Grammy made all her purchases, they walked out of the store without paying for the 'Flurp'.

When Grammy was buckling Kellan, she noticed the 'Flurp" (it's even fun to type that word) and freaked out. She said "Kellan! We didn't pay for this!". Kellan kind of understood what happened but we explained it to him.

So when I got to Grammy and Granfy's to pick Kellan up, I explained that we were heading straight to WalMart to tell them what he had done and pay for the toy. I wasn't punishing Kellan, because I honestly don't think he intended to take the toy, but he did need to know we were going to do the right thing and explain our mistake.

On the drive to WalMart, I was practicing with Kellan on what he should say to the cashier. Camden, who's extremely sensitive, kept telling me that that was too much for Kellan to remember and he wouldn't be able to do it!

In line at customer service, I got a little nervous. Was I going to get in trouble? What words were actually going to come out of Kellan's mouth? I looked up, and Camden's behind the customer service counter with his elite school uniform on and a backwards cap asking if he could help who's next in line. (So much for his anxiety about this event). After realizing I should probably get Camden back on this side of the counter it was our turn. I took a deep breath (not enough time to take a Xanax) and put Kellan on the counter so he could speak with the lady.

Here's what Kellan said (not remorseful at all but with a huge dimply grin). "I'm sorry I took this and paid for it". The lady looked confused. I corrected Kellan and said he meant he was sorry he took this and didn't pay for it. The cashier was very good with Kellan letting him know he did the right thing by coming back in to fix his mistake. We paid, for the item and Kellan skipped away and asked me to open his 'Flurp". I looked at him flabbergasted and said, "Oh kid, you're not playing with this toy for a long time". More for the cashier's benefit, but you know, whatever makes me look good.

We went into the store to pick up a few things and went to the checkout line to actually pay for the items this time. (What a concept!). This male cashier recognized the boys because they had just been there and seemed really excited to see them again. Kellan insisted on paying for the 'Flurp', but I showed the cashier the receipt because I was not going to pay another 99 cents. By no way am I made of money. So he either wants to take stuff from a store, or pay twice. Eh, it would all even out in the end.

As we finished checking out, the young cashier said, "Well guys, I'm here for another hour if you need to come back and get anything else". I laughed and the boys and I walked out the door and into the parking lot. As soon as we were in the cool free air, Camden announced that he had to go potty. So we turned around and walked into our new favorite WalMart. Of course the cashier spotted us immediately and waved. I definitely don't get embarrassed easily, but watching the boys and cashier wave happily to each other made me walk with my head down. It didn't help that they took about 15 minutes in the bathroom and the cashier was waiting to say bye (or bye for now) when we left.

The morale of this story is, uh... just another day in the life of the Tilleys...
